Ballet Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian will launch the tour of the China Liaoning Ballet Company, which starts on January 14 at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theater, according to TASS [], the press office of the Primorsky government announced it on Thursday. "The tour of the Liaoning ballet troupe of China will take place on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theater from January 14 to 19. The guests will present two colorful performances - Spartacus and Mulan," the statement said. The work follows the exploits of Spartacus, the leader of the slave uprising against the Romans known as the Third Servile War, although the ballet's storyline takes considerable liberties with the historical record. Khachaturian composed Spartacus in 1954, and was awarded a Lenin Prize for the composition. It was first staged, with choreography by Leonid Yakobson, in Leningrad 1956.
