Biography
Russian and Armenian composer, musicologist, pianist and teacher, Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR (1965) Gayane Chebotaryan was born in the city of Rostov-on-Don.
She received her primary education at the Rostov Musical College. In 1943 she graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory with professors of Christopher Kushnarev (composition) and Moses Khalfin (piano). Since 1947 she taught at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, where she led a class of special polyphony, and in 1977 she became a professor.
Developed the course "Polyphony in Armenian Music". Author of monographs, articles, essays, and methodological works, particularly polyphonic readers (Armenian music samples), arranged folk songs. Among famous pieces composed by Chebotaryan is a Sonata for piano (1943), the Piano trio (1945), the Poem-cantata "Armenia" for choir and orchestra (1947), Preludes for piano (1948), Symphonic pictures "Feast" (1950), "Polyphonic Album for Youth" for piano (1972), the Cycle of preludes and fugues in the modes of Armenian music for piano (1979), Concerto for piano and orchestra (1980).
