My collaboration with duduk player Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has a history of years. As a student of the People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia, Professor Gevorg Dabaghyan at Yerevan Conservatory Emmanuel Hovhannisyan gained a great deal of experience in performing not only the melodies of folk songs written for the duduk but also a number of classical compositions. In addition to the end-of-year exams, he gives solo concerts several times during the student year, constantly updating his repertoire. He also participated in republican and international competitions and always got the highest awards.
Besides the duduk, Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has a brilliant mastery of almost all Armenian wooden string instruments: zurna, shvi, blul, parkapazuk, pku. It gives great opportunities for the musician to perform not only at the ensembles of traditional instruments but also in the international music arena, presenting the Armenian brass instruments in a special way with their unique sounds.
Emmanuel Hovhannisyan also carries out extensive pedagogical activities. In addition to teaching at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory for more than 10 years, in 2010 He founded the "Dudukman" studio, which teaches duduk and other Armenian brass instruments and maintains its popularity not only in Armenia but also abroad. Musicians of different nationalities and different ages study in the studio. Within the "Ari Tun" program of the Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia, he organized duduk festivals in 2008 and 2012, for which he was awarded a special letter of thanks from the Ministry.
Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has given master classes at the Vienna Conservatory, Klagenfurt Conservatory, the Moscow Gnessin Russian Music Academy, and other music institutions.
As an orchestral musician, Emmanuel Hovhannisyan performed at "Music Fair" (Vienna, Austria), "Brucknerhouse" (Linz, Austria), Dubai Opera House (UAE), etc. Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has also performed at the Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg, Germany), the Music gebouw (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), the Bozar Center Concert Hall (Brussels, Belgium), the Gulbenkian Center (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and in other famous concert halls.
Emmanuel Hovhannisyan is a popular soloist abroad, he has performed at famous festivals in Europe and Asia, such as the Rudolstadt-Festival (Rudolstadt, Germany), Holland Festival (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Morgenland Festival (Osnabrück, Germany), Beiteddine Art Festival, Lebanon), Baalbek Music Festival (Baalbek, Lebanon), etc. Performed at Avet Terteryan's Third Symphony (which includes two zurnas and duduk) he has performed with a number of famous orchestras. Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has given solo concerts in Germany, France, Austria, Italy, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Mongolia, Lebanon, Russia, multiplying the fame of Armenian composing art in different parts of the world. As a soloist, he performed Henrik Anasyan's Duduk concerto and Vache Sharafyan's Duduk and Violin concerto many times. Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has premiered a number of works written by Armenian composers.
Emmanuel Hovhannisyan is interested in chamber music. He is the lead member of Naghash and Gurdjieff ensembles, since their foundation he has had concert tours in almost all continents of the world, presenting the Armenian national music and performing art in a unique way.
In collaboration with the Gurdjieff ensemble, Emmanuel Hovhannisyan took part in the recording of two CDs released by ECM Records, which won the "Edisson Award". Emmanuel Hovhannisyan performs in the ensemble "Anton Pan", which performs the music of composer Dmitry Cantemir and the music of the nations living in the Ottoman Empire. Emmanuel Hovhannisyan also collaborates with the "Roots Revival" ensemble, whose concert program is rich in samples of the national music of different nations. The members of the ensemble are musicians from Spain, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania and Great Britain. By the way, some of the works are arranged by Emmanuel Hovhannisyan himself. However, the list of duduk player collaborations does not end with this, they are many: "Armenian Spirit" band, "The Cats" band, "Van" quartet, "Karen Asatryan and Emmanuel Hovhannisyan" duo, "Sound Affinities" ensemble and others.
In addition to collaborations, Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has his own musical projects - the "Sheram" ensemble, which presents Armenian minstrels' music from the 15th century. During its short activity, the ensemble has managed to give numerous concerts not only for the Armenian audience but also for our compatriots living in the Diaspora. Using the national brass instruments in jazz art, especially in ethno-jazz, in 2015 Emmanuel Hovhannisyan creates the "Emmanuel Hovhannisyan & Emotion Band" ethno-jazz quartet. The group's repertoire mostly includes his works written especially for this project. "Emmanuel Hovhannisyan & Emotion Band - Crossroads" CD, produced by "Global Music" company, will be released in 2021.
Duduk player Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has carried out unique work in the field of national instrumentation during his creative activity. He has created a unique bass duduk, which differs from its previous variants with a classic, more practical application, allows the performer to play with this instrument as a soloist, discovering new possibilities of duduk tone, while adhering to the traditional duduk applique. With this newly discovered duduk, Emmanuel Hovhannisyan has recorded a number of compositions, many of which are his own works written especially for the new bass duduk.
With the participation of Emmanuel Hovhannisyan, more than 20 CDs have been released by such well-known record labels as ECM Records, Sony Records, Naxos Records, Mosfilm Records.
Emmanuel Hovhannisyan for spreading Armenian national music, as well as organizing a duduk festival in Armenia in 2012. was awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia.
