Biography
Gevorg Hakobyan graduated from Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (Vocal department in national professor Sergey Danielyan’s class, 2004). At the same year the artistic director of the theater, world-famous tenor Mr. Gegham Grigorian invited him to occupy the position of soloist at the opera. Gevorg Hakobyan has become the ever youngest dramatic Armenian baritone performing the following roles in the Armenian operas: Mosi in A. Tigranian's "Anush", Arshak in T. Tchukhajian's "Arshak II" and David Bek in Tigranian’s homonymous opera. He allured the audience with his thick and warm tone of voice, inborn musical taste and with the deep and emotional interpretation of the roles. Thanks to his talent and hard work, he became one of his country's most popular and anticipated opera artists.
In 2008 Gevorg Hakobyan received a gold medal and first prize in the “First International Pavel Lisitsian Baritone Competition” (Moscow).
Since 2008 Gevorg Hakobyan has sung at the different prestigious theaters around the world, creating the characters of Nabucco, Simone Boccanegra, Carlo Gérard, Eugeni Onegin, Tomsky, Alfio, Tonio, Sharples, Amonasro. The singer has worked with such conductors as Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Tugan Sokhiev, Alexander Vedernikov, Mikhail Yurovsky, Bramall, Marco Letonja, Antonello Allemandi, Alexander Samoile and many others. A significant role in Gevorg Hakobyan’s career played in the collaboration with famous conductor Lorin Maazel. Under the latter’s button of L. Maazel Hakobyan came up with 20 performances, singing parts of Sharples, Alfio and Amonasro (Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia, Spain, 2010).
In 2013 he appeared in Closing gala concert of the XXXI International Opera Festival named after Fyodor Shalyapin conducted by Valery Gergiev, with Mariinsky Theatre’s leading singers and orchestra, broadcast live on "Mezzo" and "Culture" TV channels.
In 2014 he sang with Placido Domingo as his stage partner in Simone Boccanegra and performed the role of Paolo Albiani (Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia).
In 2015 he made his house debut in Mariinsky Theatre as Baron Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca with Maria Guleghina in the title role. Currently, Hakobyan is the guest artist of Mariinsky.
In 2017 he appeared as Grigory Gryaznoy at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Tsar’s Bride” (company and role debut). After his debut, he was involved in many performances as the guest artist of Bolshoi.
In 2018 he successfully performed Count Tomsky in Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spade” (Premiere, conductor: Tugan Sokhiev, Director: Rimas Tuminas).
In recent years Hakobyan has sung at the Oper Stuttgart (Tomsky), Teatro Comunale di Bologna (Baron Scarpia, conductor: Valerio Galli, Director: Daniele Abbado), Teatro dell'Opera di Roma (Scarpia, Tonio, Alfio), Caracalla Festival (Nabucco), Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia (Scarpia in Puccini’s “Tosca”, title role: Lianna Haroutounian, director: Davide Livermore, Conductor: Nicola Luisotti), Teatro Massimo di Palermo (Alfio in Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana”, Santuzza: Sonia Ganassi. Conductor: Fabrizio Maria Carminati).
In 2018 Hakobyan participated in the two concerts within the framework of the “Eilat International Music Festival” under the baton of Constantine Orbelian.
Hakobyan is an Associate Professor of Vocal Department at Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, he has been teaching classical vocal at the vocal-theoretical department since 2010.
In 2011 Gevorg Hakobyan received the honorary title of Merited Artist of the Republic of Armenia.
