Biography
Lusine (Svetlana) Zakaryan was born on June 1, 1937, in the city of Akhaltskha, Samtskhe-Javakhki region, Georgia. She received her primary education at Russian Primary School No. 4 in Akhaltska. In 1952, she moved to Yerevan with his family to get a musical education. From 1953-1957 she studied at the Romanos Melikyan Music School (Rozalya Gulabyan's class). In 1957, she entered the solo singing department of the Komitas Yerevan State Conservatory (Armine Karamyan's class).
1959-1992 Lusine sang in the choir of St. Etchmiadzin Cathedral (conductors: Hrant Gevorgyan, Khoren Meikhanejian) as a soloist. Since 1965, she had been a soloist of the HayPhilharmonia. 1970-1983 was a soloist of the Armenian National Television and Radio Symphony Orchestra. Lusine Zakaryan performed works of Western European, Russian and Armenian composers, folk and spiritual music. Back in the Soviet years, when many musical styles were banned, as well as spiritual music, she had the courage to bring Armenian spiritual music to the stage.
Lusine performed in a number of countries around the world (USA, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, England, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Poland, Holland, Soviet Union) presenting Komitas, Armenian folk songs etc. She regularly performed with famous Armenian organists Vahagn Stamboltsyan, Levon Abrahamyan, Perch Zhamkochian. Marianna Harutyunyan accompanied her for many years.
In the 1960s and 1970s, she performed as a soloist with the State Academic Choir of Armenia (chief conductor Hovhannes Chekijian) and Armenian Chamber Orchestra (chief conductor: Zareh Sahakyants) in Moscow, Leningrad, Paris, and Marseille.
She sang in about 15 languages, including Armenian, Russian, Ukrainian, English, French, Georgian, Latin, Italian, Spanish, Hungarian, Czech, etc. Composer Arno Babajanyan wrote his "Vocalize" for Lusine.
