Biography
Sargis Aslamazian was born in Mozdok. He learned to play the violin from his father. In 1912-15 he studied at Yekaterinodar (Krasnodar) music school, and took lessons from the famous cellist H. Merk. In 1915-27 he continued his education at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of professor S. Kozolupov. From 1937 he taught at the same conservatory (from 1947 - professor).
In 1925-68, he was one of the founding members of Komitas Quartet. He also engaged in creative work. His arrangements of works by Armenian, Russian and Western European composers for string quartet, string orchestra, and cello ensemble are significant. They are characterized by the subtlety of harmony, comprehensive completion of the form, colorful instrumentation, and skillful use of ensemble playing techniques. Among them are Handel's "Passacaglia", Paganini's "24th Caprice" and others. Arranged several songs by Komitas: "Shogher jan", "Habrban", "Chinar es", "Spring", "Keler-tsoler", "Sky ampel a" etc., which are among the best pages of Armenian quartet literature and an important role has done in its development.
In 1945, the title of People's Artist of Armenia was awarded. 1939 awarded the "Order of Honor", 1946 - USSR, 1965 - RA State awards.
Died in Moscow.
