Yerevan celebrates the 80th anniversary of composer Tolib Shakhidi, a student of Aram Khachaturian
A concert dedicated to the 80th anniversary of composer Tolib Shakhidi, a distinguished student of Aram Khachaturian, was held at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. Attendees included Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan, Deputy Minister Daniel Danielyan, and the composer himself, Tolib Shakhidi.
In her welcoming speech, Minister Zhanna Andreasyan noted that Shakhidi’s work has long transcended geographical and cultural boundaries, becoming a valuable part of the world’s musical heritage.
“Tolib Shakhidi is one of those composers whose national roots do not limit creative thought; on the contrary, they become a means of speaking a universal language. In his works, we hear the profound philosophy of the East, the powerful traditions of European symphonism, and the free-thinking spirit of a contemporary artist,” she said.
The Minister emphasized that Shakhidi’s biography is closely connected with Armenia and Armenian musical culture. As a student at the Moscow State Conservatory, he studied in the class of Aram Khachaturian, continuing the tradition that the great master passed on through his many students and followers.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Minister Andreasyan presented the composer with the Medal of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia.
During the evening, soloists Alessandro Taverna and Maxim Novikov performed the composer’s works with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sergey Smbatyan.
The concert program featured the following works: Festive Overture, Viola Concerto, Piano Concerto No. 2 for Chamber Orchestra, Rhapsody-Dialogue for Piano and Orchestra on Themes by Aram Khachaturian, and Sado, a symphonic poem for orchestra.
