The Yerevan State Chamber Choir Turns 30: Anniversary Concert Series to Launch
One of the most important ensembles in Armenian choral art, the Yerevan State Chamber Choir, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding this year. On May 16, the anniversary concert series dedicated to the choir’s jubilee will open with a concert titled “With a Sweet Dream.”
During the evening, audiences will hear sacred and secular choral works by Komitas, cycles of Armenian peasant and dance songs, excerpts from sharakans (Armenian liturgical chants), choral works by Edgar Hovhannisyan, and arrangements of Armenian folk songs, presenting the rich and colorful world of Armenian national music.
In 1996, Honored Art Worker of the Republic of Armenia Harutyun Topikyan founded the Yerevan Chamber Choir, and in 2009, the choir received state status and was renamed the Yerevan State Chamber Choir. For three decades, the choir has played a unique role in preserving, developing, and internationally promoting Armenian choral culture.
Over the years, the choir has developed a distinctive artistic identity, appearing on prestigious international stages and collaborating with world-renowned musicians, conductors, and leading orchestras. Its repertoire includes world choral masterpieces as well as Armenian sacred, folk, classical, and contemporary works, all of which have consistently received high professional acclaim.
At the core of the ensemble’s creative activity has always been the comprehensive presentation and popularization of Komitas’s choral heritage, preserving the finest traditions of Armenian musical art while offering contemporary interpretations.
As part of the anniversary concert series, audiences will hear works by Komitas, Armenian and international classical composers, as well as special projects, new performances, and musical initiatives dedicated to the jubilee.
Since 2021, the choir’s Artistic Director and Principal Choirmaster has been Kristina Voskanyan, under whose leadership the ensemble continues to expand the scope of its creative activity while preserving its high artistic performance traditions.
