A concert dedicated to 150th birthday of Komitas will take place at Chicago Cultural Center Preston Bradley Hall on January 12. The concert is presented by Crossing Borders Music through their concert series “Choosing Life and Freedom [https://crossingbordersmusic.org/],” in collaboration with Armenian composer and pianist Tatev Amiryan who will perform as a guest pianist at the concert. The performance will include arrangements of Komitas’ vocal music for string quartet that is still popular today around the world. It will also honor Komitas’ legacy and remember those who, like him, endured a horrific tragedy. To do so, Armenian composer and pianist Tatev Amiryan will perform works by Komitas, Arno Babajanyan and her own original compositions “Tristesse” and “Waiting for the Dawn.” The performance is the third in Crossing Borders Music’s six-concert series “Choosing Life and Freedom,” featuring music by composers who responded to terrible tragedies with music affirming life and to oppression with music affirming freedom.
