Contemporary Music Festival opened in Yerevan
On February 21, the Contemporary Music Festival of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra officially opened in Yerevan. The festival is held with the support of the RA Ministry of ESCS, in cooperation with the Composers’ Union of Armenia. The festival’s strategic partner is GTB Holdings.
Running through March 17, the festival will feature six concerts, five soloists, and 21 works by 16 Armenian and international composers, including several world premieres. The opening concert marked the world premiere of Vig Zartman’s Piano Concerto. Throughout the festival, the orchestra will perform alongside internationally acclaimed cellist Mario Brunello, resident artist of the orchestra’s 20th anniversary season, as well as renowned pianists Ashot Khachaturian, Heghine Rapyan, Ruben Kozin, and violinist Roman Kim.
The Contemporary Music Festival was founded by Sergey Smbatyan, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the orchestra, with the mission of presenting and promoting Armenian classical and contemporary compositional art to local and international audiences.
One of the festival’s key objectives is the preservation and promotion of Armenian compositional heritage. To this end, a comprehensive range of initiatives is being implemented, including the recording, filming, and international distribution of symphonic works, as well as the digitization and publication of sheet music.
As a result of the partnership with GTB Holdings, the prestigious publishing house Universal Edition will begin publishing works by Armenian composers. This collaboration will ensure the preservation of their creative legacy, enhance their international visibility, and provide modern copyright protection through advanced automated systems. Universal Edition serves as a leading global platform used by orchestras and soloists worldwide when selecting repertoire, opening new opportunities for Armenian composers on the international stage.
