Genocide is a catastrophe and everyone should know it: Mischa Maisky
Legendary cellist Mischa Maisky will perform in Yerevan on February 28. Together with the Armenian National Philharmonic orchestra, he will present Tchaikovsky’s Nocturne, “Kol Nidrei” by Bruch and Cello concerto N. 1 by Saint-Saëns. Maisky performed in Yerevan in 2007 and played Dvorak’s famous Cello concerto.
“This time I chose this program. Saint-Saëns’s concerto is very popular and beautiful. It’s very sentimental for me because I played it when I was only 13 and it was my debut on a big stage. My teacher, great cellist M. Rostropovich made his debut with the same piece and at the same age. I hope people enjoy it”,-Maisky told media representatives during the conference. As the concerto is quite short, they decided to add pieces by Tchaikovsky and Bruch.
Mischa Maisky performed “Chinar es” by Komitas in 2015 with Belgian National Orchestra within the concert series dedicated to the Cenntenial of Armenian Genocide․ “What can I say about genocide? It's a catastrophe and everyone should know about it. But I am so glad to talk about it with the music language. It was a very unique concert and I am proud to be a part of it. I like to reflect my feelings with music”.
The second part of the concert will feature Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. The concert will be held under the baton of the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of ANPO Eduard Topchjan.
Maisky has the distinction of being the only cellist in the world to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky. Rostropovich has lauded Mischa Maisky as "... one of the most outstanding talents of the younger generation of cellists. His playing combines poetry and exquisite delicacy with great temperament and brilliant technique."
As an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist during the last 25 years, he made over 30 recordings with such orchestras as Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Orpheus und Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and others. One of the highlights in his career was the year 2000 - it was mainly devoted to a world-wide Bach tour which included over 100 concerts! In order to express his deep admiration for this great composer, Mischa Maisky has recorded Bach's Solo Suites for the third time.
