“Pagliacci” on the Stage of the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre after 30 Years
On March 27, International Theatre Day, President of the Republic of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan, and Deputy Minister Daniel Danielyan attended the premiere of the opera “Pagliacci” at the Alexander Spendiaryan National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

With the participation of Armenian, Georgian, and Italian artists, the opera “Pagliacci” by the outstanding Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo was staged in Yerevan.

Mario Acampa directed the production from the prestigious La Scala. The director received the proposal to collaborate with the Yerevan Opera Theatre from its director and conductor Karen Durgaryan. Although he is the author of numerous notable productions, this is his first time working on “Pagliacci.”

The classical story has been presented on the Yerevan stage with modern approaches and interpretations. Both the music and the libretto were written by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

At the Opera Theatre, “Pagliacci” was first staged in excerpts in 1935. A full production followed in 1937, and later in 1944. The last time “Pagliacci” was performed on the Yerevan stage was thirty years ago.

After the performance, the President, accompanied by the Minister of ESCS, toured the backstage area of the theatre and spoke with members of the creative team.
