The State National Academic Choir of Armenia to be named after Ohannes Tchekidjian
Recently, the Government approved the issue of renaming the “State National Academic Choir of Armenia” to the “National Academic Choir of Armenia named after Ohannes Tchekidjian”.
As the Ministry of ESCS notes, the goal of the change is to honor the long-term merits of the People’s Artist of the USSR, laureate of the USSR and Armenian SSR State Prizes, professor, maestro Ohannes Tchekidjian.
The National Academic Choir of Armenia was founded in 1937 as a collective of the Armenian Philharmonic consisting of 25-30 people. Since 1961, the artistic director and chief conductor of the choir has been maestro Ohannes Tchekidjian. Since 1969, the choir has been awarded the title of “Academic”, and since 1975, it has been an Honored Collective of the Republic. On November 15, 2012, the choir was granted the status of “National” by the Government.
Under the leadership of Ohannes Tchekidjian, the choir has performed at 184 concert venues around the world: in Paris, London, New York, Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc. During these years, the choir has given 866 concerts outside of Armenia.
The choir, led by the maestro, has also performed with 69 symphony orchestras, including the USSR State Academic Symphony, the St. Petersburg Academic Symphony, and the Bolshoi Theater orchestras.
Continuing the best traditions of Armenian classical choral music, under the maestro, the choir has reached an unsurpassed level of Armenian choral art, becoming the best interpreter of Armenian and world classical choral music.
