French Impresionism, Beethoven, Berio and not only: “Undiscovered Europe” project culminated in Yerevan
The final concert of the “Undiscovered Europe” project took place on November 20 at Arno Babajanyan Concert Hall. It’s the first project of CANTATA Cultural NGO. The project is made possible with the support of the RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports and the partnership with the State Philharmonia of Armenia. This concert is also under the patronage of the Czech Republic Embassy in Armenia. ESCS Deputy Minister Daniel Danielyan, as well as ambassadors and diplomatic representatives, attended the concert.
The concert featured a soloist of A. Spendiaryan National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet, mezzo-soprano Varsenik Avanyan of the as well as musicians from the same theater's orchestra, led by conductor Harutyun Arzumanyan. During the gala concert, musicians presented the vocal series "Biblical Songs" by the famous Czech composer of the 19th century, Antonin Dvorak, which was performed in Armenia for the first time. When talking about this piece, musicologists note that "if Dvorak wrote only this piece, he would still be called a genius composer."
The next piece was folk songs by the famous Italian composer of the twentieth century Luciano Berio, which he arranged especially for his beloved wife, the world-famous opera singer Cathy Berberyan. This cycle includes arrangements of American, French, Italian, and Armenian folk melodies, embodying messages of peace and love. “Arrangements of Berio's folk songs are written for solo performers, and I am extremely happy that the finest musicians of our Opera Theater orchestra join me on the stage today. Once again, I want to thank Maestro Harutyun Arzumanyan for embracing this challenging repertoire and presenting it to you,” Varsenik Avanyan mentioned.
In the end, musicians performed Hari Haralo, Tamar's song from the opera "David Bek" by the famous Armenian composer Armen Tigranyan. This piece is specially arranged by Vahagn Hayrapetyan, an honored artist of Armenia, for this program.
The stage director for all concerts was Aram Sukiasyan, an honored art worker of RA. The first concert took place in April, where Varsenik Avayan performed vocal-chamber music of the French Impressionism period, followed by a July concert exploring Beethoven's vocal-chamber compositions.
One of the main purposes of the CANTATA cultural NGO is to introduce the Armenian audience to the works of prominent composers that are seldom or never performed in Armenia.
