Biography
People's Artist of the USSR Edgar Hovhannisyan was born on January 14, 1930, in Yerevan.
Graduated from the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas (1953, class of Grigor Yeghiazaryan), postgraduate study at the Moscow Conservatory (1957, class of A. Khachaturian). In 1962-1968 he headed the Opera and Ballet Theater after Spendiaryan, in 1970-1974 - Armenian Folk Song and Dance Ensemble, in 1979-1984 he was the Artistic Director of the Chamber Choir of Television and Radio of the Republic of Armenia, 1986-1991 - Rector of Yerevan Conservatory.
E. Hovhannisyan had a significant influence on the development of Armenian music. He wrote ballets "Marble" (1957), "Blue Nocturne" (1964), "Eternal Idol" (1966), "Antouni" (1969), the drama "Masquerade"on Khachaturian's ballet composition ("Masquerade", 1982). The opera-ballet "David of Sassoun'' (1976) and the opera "Journey to Arzrum" (according to Pushkin's notes of the same name) (1987) are in line with the modern tendencies of musical performing art.
Hovhannisyan's chamber and symphony works are distinguished by moral-philosophical generalizations. Broad-mindedness, dynamism, renewal of the national language are typical of the Piano Quintet (1955), symphonies (1957, 1983, 1984), the symphonic poem "Calvary" (1993), "Grigor Narekatsi"(Gregory of Narek) oratorio (1995), quartets (1950, 1958, 1964, 1981), Sonata "Epitaph" for cello (1975), concerto-baroque for chamber orchestra (1984).
He is the author of songs "Erebuni-Yerevan", "Arpa-Sevan", "Sardarapat", soundtracks and music for theater performances.
Edgar Hovhannisyan was a deputy of the member of Council of the USSR (1963-1971).
