Biography

Composer, pedagogue, People's Artist of the USSR, public figure Edward Mirzoyan was born on May 12, 1921, in Gori, Georgia. 

In 1941, Edward Mirzoyan graduated from the department of a composition of the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (V. Talyan's class), and in 1946-1948 he improved his skills at the music studio of the Armenian House of Culture in Moscow. 

The years of studying at the Yerkan Conservatory were the period of formation of Mirzoyan's personality. Here he studied harmony, instrumentation, polyphony, and became acquainted with Armenian folk music and the works of Armenian and European composers. Two romances “They say that" (1940) and "Dream" (1941) based on Avetik Isahakyan’s lyrics, are most popular among the chamber works of this period.       

From March to November 1942, Mirzoyan served in the Soviet Army, devoting himself to organizing and leading army song and dance ensembles. At the same time, Edward continued learning music at the great theorist and specialist of polyphony, prof. Kristapor Kushnaryan. 

During his studies at a music studio (1946-1948) were very effective for Ed. Mirzoyan. There he wrote new pieces expanded the range of characters and ideas, perfected his compositional skills, completed the Symphonic Dance Suite (1946), wrote the Polyphonic Sonata for Piano (1946), and the Festive Overture for the Symphony Orchestra (1947), String quartet (1947), "Armenia" cantata (1948). The music-lovers got acquainted with this work for the first time in Moscow, at the House of Culture of Armenia, in 1947, with the performance of the Komitas Quartet.  

Mirzoyan returned to Armenia in 1948. With the recommendation of K. Saradjev, he was invited to Yerevan Conservatory to lead one of the composition classes. In 1965 he became a professor of the same institution. Jivan Ter-Tadevosyan, Konstantin Orbelyan, Avet Terteryan, Vache Sharafyan, Khachatur Avetisyan, Robert Amirkhanyan are among his students.  

Ed. Mirzoyan is one of those musicians of our time who reasonably seek something new in art, striving to reflect the spirit of the time, the reality, the struggle of the people for a peaceful, happy life and a bright future. A vivid proof of all this is the four-part Symphony for string orchestra and Timpani (c- moll). 

From 1956 to 1991 he was the chairman of the board of the Composers' Union of Armenia (honorary since 1994), and from 1977 he was the chairman of the Peace Foundation of Armenia (honorary since 2009). He was awarded the "Cyril and Methodius" (1971, Bulgaria), the "St. Sahak-St. Mesrop", "Mesrop Mashtots" (both 2001), "Peter the Great" (2005, Germany) orders, "St. Movses" (1998), the gold medal of NAS RA (2006), Leonardo da Vinci (2006),“ Ekaterina II ” (2006, Russia) medals.   

Edward Mirzoyan died on October 5, 2012, in Yerevan.
