Biography

Gagik Hovunts was born on March 1, 1930, in Yerevan. 1939 studied violin at Yerevan A. Spendiaryan music school (V. Akhsharumyan's class), in 1946 - Yerevan P. Tchaikovsky Music School (K. Dombaev's class). In 1954 graduated from the violin department of the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (Karp Dombaev's class) and in 1957 the composition department (Grigor Yeghiazaryan's class). He had been teaching harmony at the Yerevan Conservatory since 1964 (professor since 1990).

He has written symphonic and chamber works, pieces for violin, piano, cello, and symphony orchestras. 

1978-85 4 albums of his works were released in Moscow, 2008. and 2013 2 CDs in Paris. 1962 G. Hovunts was awarded the First Class Diploma in Moscow for the String Quartet (1960). He had been a member of the Composers Union of Armenia since 1957. 1984 In 2013 he was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of Armenia, in 2013 - the 1st-degree medal "For Services to the Motherland".

In 2003 book entitled "Gagik Hovunts: Sketches of a creative portrait - conversations with a composer"  was written by musicologist Shushan Hyusnunts and composer Arsen Babajanyan. 


Other musicians
