Biography

Vladilen Balyan was born in 1924 in Yerevan. He graduated from the choral conducting and composition faculty of Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory.

His compositions include: The Endless Secret of Love and Fate (chamber operas), Hazaran Blbul (ballet suite), The Madding Crowd (poetry – reciter, choir, orchestra), Concert Fantasy (trumpet, choir, orchestra), Requiem in memory of the earthquake victims (choir), It’s Autumn – a Wedding in the Village (song and dance ensemble), Vocal-instrumental cycles: Karatogher – Four Lines, Spring in the Forest, Three Pages from a Woman’s Diary, With you, Armenia, Van Sea (choir, piano trio), Epitaph (vocal and string orchestra), Six Romances without Words (piano trio), Your Spring Comes In Armenian Way (vocal, blul, duduk) Other choral and vocal works to the lyrics of Armenian classical poets.

Vladilen Balyan was an honorary citizen of Gyumri and Yerevan. Honored Art Worker of Soviet Armenia, People’s Artist of the Republic of Armenia, Knight of the Order of Movses Khorenatsi. In 1965 he organized the festival of the great 20th-century composer Benjamin Britten. Besides the composer himself, the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich as well as the singers Galina Vishnevskaya and Peter Pears took part in the festival.

In 1966, as director of the Armenian Philharmonic, he initiated the creation of a stained glass window for the Small Concert Hall by Martiros Saryan.
