Biography

Yuri Davtyan was born in Vanadzor, on June 10, 1929. In 1938 he entered the P. Tchaikovsky Music school, class of the violin. 1947-52 he studied conducting at Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (class of Constantine Saradjev and Gevorg Tigranov).

From 1953 he worked at A. Spendiaryan Opera and Ballet theater, from 1980-to 2000 occupied the position of Principal conductor of the same opera. 1964-66 he was the principal conductor of Saratov Opera, 1966-70 and 1992-94 Davtyan led the symphony orchestra of Armenia's public radio. Armenian conductor performed with prestigious orchestras such as Bolshoi theater, Mariinsky, etc. 

He was the chief conductor of the Yerevan H. Paronyan State Theater of Musical Comedy. From 1969 he taught at the Yerevan Komitas  State Conservatory (professor since 1979). In 1972 he was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of Armenia, in 1984 - the title of People's Artist of Armenia.
