"The Black Garden": A performance about universal values
SUMMEET International Summer Dance Festival will be held in Yerevan on August 24-29. According to the organizers, it may become one of the symbols of modern Armenia.
It will open with the performance of Kannon Dance House’s "The Black Garden" directed by Valeria Kasparova. As the director of Kannon Dance house, producer Vadim Kasparov mentioned in a press conference, the performance is dedicated to the first Artsakh war. It is based on the childhood memories of the children who witnessed it. "The preparation works started on the eve of the 44-day war. "At first we wanted to stop the work, fearing that we would be accused of populism, but we continued, because the war is a terrible thing, we should talk about it," said the producer. According to him, Valeria came to Armenia to study Armenian dance in detail with Gagik Ginosyan. Elements of Armenian traditional dance, as well as Armenian music, were used in the "Black Garden". "Valeria is the only Armenian dancer in this performance, the rest are Russians. She was following the situation of Nagorno-Karabakh every day, communicating with friends living in Armenia, and coming to rehearsals with hard feelings. I am sure that the play is about universal values, but in Armenia, it will be perceived more correctly. It is completely based on symbols, which is understandable to everyone. There is pain here, but there is no speculation. "
The play was supposed to be presented in Stepanakert as well, but it was postponed for various reasons. According to Kasparov, "The Black Garden" will be played in Russia.
Within the framework of "SUMMEET" almost all forms of modern dance will be illustrated, the audience will witness the performances staged by Armenian and foreign choreographers, as well as, will have a chance to attend a number of masterclasses and lectures.
The project is implemented with the support of the RA ESCS Ministry with the joint efforts of "SARER" Cultural NGO, "Kannon Dance" Dance House in St. Petersburg, YKSC Opera Studio, "Balmanukyan Dance Project" company, as well as “Open Look” International Contemporary Dance Festival.
