“The Last Night”։ World premiere
The world premiere of Alexandr Iradyan’s “The Last Night” theatricalized poem for piano solo and orchestra will take place on November 21 at Aram Khachatryan Concert Hall. The work will be represented by Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor: Eduard Topchjan) and famous pianist Lusine Khachatryan. The piece is based on the ballet suite, which this year has been re-edited to become a theatricalized poem. The work is a unique performance, where the pianist becomes the main actor and storyteller. The work refers to several historical facts that took place in the 20th century, the basis of which is the same.
The year is 1918. The family of the last Tsar of Russia Nikolai Romanov is waiting for the decision on their case with a sense of foreboding.
In the original version a ballet suite "The Last Night" is based on the play “The Last night of the last king” by Eduard Radzinsky. All aspects are based on the official documentary evidence (diaries, official protocols and statements of participants as well as witnesses of those tragic events) which was archived and kept secret during the Soviet Period.
The piece also features a storyline from 1943 - a Jewish family in a concentration camp awaiting their pending execution. The main point of both narratives is the feeling of waiting with either forbidding or hope and the desire to live. The roots of the Holocaust go as far back as 1915 with the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. This served as a blueprint for Hitler’s genocide and is now regarded as a motivating lever for the implementation of his murderous plans.
Every motive and fragment of musical material contains information hidden in the score. This combination of two or more storylines spanning a huge period of time articulates the ideas of the composer - paradoxical history: a totalitarian power, which would in time contribute to the downfall of nazism but at the same time, in the process of its formation, brought so much pain and destruction.
