Biography

Composer and pianist David Balasanyan was born in 1983 in Yerevan. He graduated from Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in 2005, department of composition and completed his post-graduate studies in 2008 (Professor Ashot Zohrabyan). 

In 2009-2013 he worked as an assistant at the same department. 

David Balasanyan has been a member of the Composers Union of Armenia since 2006. 

He is an author of chamber, piano, vocal, choral and orchestral works which have been performed in Armenia, Germany, Italy, USA, Israel, Russia, Georgia, Brazil, Greece, Lebanon, Canada and Belgium. Some of Balasanyan’s compositions were published by Swiss ՛՛Sordino Ediziuns Musicalas՛՛ and Japanese ’’Da Vinci Edition’’ musical publishing houses. 

His ’’The Pillow Тagh’’ composition was performed in Hannover in 2014 which was specially written for the ’’Octoplus’’ Ensemble, commissioned by NDR Radiophilharmonie.  Balasanyan has been a member of the Contemporary Sound Orchestra Ensemble since 2017. CSO is a contemporary ensemble of various performers focusing on impromptu experimental music (acoustic instruments, various objects, electronics).  He is a laureate of a number of national and international competitions: 2nd prize at the Tenth Piano Composition Competition Fidelio Online in Jazz category (2019, Spain); 3rd prize at the Tenth Piano Composition Competition Fidelio Online, in the Contemporary atonal category (2019, Spain); 1st prize at Competition for piano free improvisation at Naregatsi Art Institute (2016, Armenia); 3rd Prize at The 6th Sichuan Conservatory of Music Students Compositions Competition (2010, China); Naregatsi Young Composers Award (2006, Armenia); 2nd Prize at Benjamin Britten Competition (2003, Armenia), 1st prize at the Twelve Piano Composition Competition Fidelio Online, in the Minimalist/Experimental/New Age category (2021, Spain)

In 2006, Balasanyan participated in the European Composers Congress in Vienna as a representative of Armenia. He also participated in the Youth Cultural Forum of the CIS member states in 2018 in Tula, Russia.  David Balasanyan was also a member/vocalist of different choruses: ’’Vardanank’’, ’’Armenian Chamber Voices’’ and ’’Hover’’. 

Being also engaged in improvisations, David Balasanyan especially prefers to perform his own piano free improvisations. He cooperates with various musicians and uses a variety of electronic equipment.  David Balasanyan is an author of several musicological articles, gives private piano lessons and has students who have been awarded prizes. 

Poetry is among his interests and many of his poems can be found in his book ‘’Arahetner’’ published in 2001.
