Biography
Composer Ruben Altunyan was born in Yerevan, in 1939. He graduated from the violin department of the Tchaikovsky Secondary Music School. 1959-1964 he studied at the viola department of the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (class of Aram Shamshyan), then in 1965-1970 in the composition department of the same institution (class of Ghazaros Saryan).
In 1965 he has awarded the first prize of the Transcaucasian Competition, and in 1969 - the second prize of the 2nd Competition of the All-Union Young Composers of the USSR. 1987-90 was the artistic director of T. Altunyan State Song and Dance Ensemble of Armenia, 1983-96 the founder and artistic director of the State Folk Song Ensemble of Minstrels.
R․ Altunyan composed symphony and chamber works, arranged about 120 folk songs, dances, and patriotic songs for various ensembles. 1983 he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Armenia, in 2001 - the State Prize of the Republic of Armenia, in 2009 - the Gold Medal of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia and the title of Honored Art Worker of Armenia.
He passed awain in 2021.
