Biography
Stepan Shakaryan was born on October 23, 1935 in Baku. In 1952 he moved to Yerevan. 1952 entered Yerevan Music College after Romanos Melikyan. Studied composition at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (class of Edward Mirzoyan), then, in 1956 - at the Moscow Conservatory (class of Aram Khachaturian). He continued his studies at the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Conservatory (class of Vladimir Tsitovich).
1986 founded and directed the State Jazz Ensemble of Radio and Television of Armenia. From the 1980s he taught composition at the Stepan Jrbashyan Music School in Yerevan. Since 1991 he had been teaching instrumentation at YKSC.
Author of many works of different genres. 2 ballets: "Jealousy" and "Aghavnavank", 3 symphonies, symphonic poems and overtures, 2 sonatas for piano, vocal and instrumental works, music for theater, cinema, jazz-pop songs performed by Armenian State Jazz, Public TV Radio's pop-jazz orchestras, a number of other groups.
2008 he was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of the Republic of Armenia, in 2017, the title of People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia. 2008 Shakaryan was awarded the Gold Medal of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia.
Died on June 22, 2019.
